CASE STUDY: IT WORKED FOR BURGER KING®.
The BURGER KING® WHOPPER® Freak Out campaign, developed by Burger King Corporation’s advertising firm MDC Partners' Crispin Porter + Bogusky, showed what happened at two BURGER KING® restaurants in Nevada when customers were told that the WHOPPER® sandwich had been taken off the menu.
Burger King Corporation's digital media agency, VML, partnered with the Verizon integrated network to create an additional set of touch-points for the campaign exclusively on Verizon FiOS® TV and Video on Demand; Verizon Wireless mobile, including Mobile Web and V CAST Video; and Verizon Online. The GfK Arbor Group, one of the world's largest market research companies, analyzed the impact of Verizon’s BURGER KING® WHOPPER® Freak Out campaign using a test and control study.
EXPOSURE ON THE VERIZON NETWORK SIGNIFICANTLY INCREASED ENGAGEMENT.
Users viewed Video on Demand content, clicked on banner ads online and on Mobile Web, and visited the campaign Web site in significant numbers. The results also showed that "shared customers," Verizon customers who were already BURGER KING® customers, were more likely to visit BURGER KING® after exposure to the campaign and to generate buzz about the campaign.
Presumably, this success was because the multiple Verizon outlets made it easy for customers to engage with the campaign on the platform where they were exposed to the ad, and that association with the Verizon brand through coordinated advertising allowed a more positive brand impression for "shared customers."
